They almost killed him. Really, whoever shot him should have had better aim and made sure they finished the job. Why?
Because killing Horatio would have improved the show. As would getting a new writing/production staff.
David Caruso - Honestly, I haven't seen him in anything else he's done. He did another cop show before CSI:Miami (was it NYPD Blue?) but I never watched it.
So all I have to go on regarding his acting ability is this show - CSI Miami - , and it's really not a great showcase for his work as an actor.

No big deal if you haven't seen any of David Caruso's "other works". They are a waste of time. He has been playing the same boring stereo-typed character for the last 10 years.
